Our Review of 39 Steps

By Joanna Koping August 20, 2015

My husband and I recently had the opportunity to go into New York City for a rare night out to view ‘39 Steps.’

Little did we know what we were walking in to. As you enter the theatre, built in 1882, you are greeted by a hostess in a red clown nose, as well as when you are seated you’re given foam clown noses. We began to wonder what the level of audience participation was going to be and were highly anticipating the start of the show.

The jokes and word play begin immediately and never stop. There is an amazingly written tale of adventure, mystery and love, all while producing uproarious laughter from the crowd.

My husband and I have a very different sense of comedy, but we were both wholeheartedly laughing throughout.

The entire show is performed by a cast of four astonishing actors that were born for these rolls. Their facial expressions and body movements made the show. They worked as one and it was truly unbelievable how they were able to do such fast costume changes, playing 150 characters and sometimes up to three within a minute!

As for the before mentioned audience participation, the actors did a fantastic job of playing off of the crowd. There was an instance when an audience member took a cue and became more involved then intended, but the cast rolled with it and even took it in to action as the play went on. There was contact throughout and it made you feel like a part of it rather than making you try to believe something that wasn’t real. The props were hysterical and could not have been better played. It was truly a fantastic show and highly recommended.
