Spring, adolescence, and Judy Blume

Wahoo, spring is almost here! Kids are outside on their bikes, birds are chirping, and Rita's Ices is now open for business! Plus, this weekend is Daylights Savings (see article below for tips on adjusting to moving clocks ahead!). Now, if we could just get rid of that huge dirty snowdrift outside my driveway, life would be good! At this rate, I think it 's still going to be here come summer. Melt, ugly snowdrift, melt!
A big shout out to Josh and Arielle for getting all A's and B's on their report cards--way to go, kids! Now, if they would just stop assigning school projects, I would be the happiest mom on the planet. This week, we learned all about the life of Walt Disney and made a Mickey Mouse poster using 2 plates and a bowl! Then, we had to place Josh's head on Judy Blume's body for International Women's Week.
It's very surreal to me that my kids are reading and writing about Judy Blume. I spent countless adolescent hours reading her books over and over, and now this means that MY kids are reaching adolescence. Not sure I am ready yet to give the sex education lecture that reading Judy Blume books require.
I mean, everything I learned about sex (Forever), wet dreams (Then Again Maybe I Won't), menstuation (Are You There God, It's Me Margaret), divorce (It's Not the End of the World), and scoliosis (Deenie)--I learned from Judy Blume books! Ha, this is even a popular blog topic, see http://www.lemondrop.com/2009/11/03/8-high-school-sex-lessons-i-learned-from-judy-blume/. In fact, there is even an anthology of women's essays called, "Everything I Needed to Know About Being a Girl I Learned from Judy Blume: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Everything-I-Needed-to-Know-About-Being-a-Girl-I-Learned-from-Judy-Blume/Jennifer-OConnell/e/9781416531043.
I was at a birthday party at Sports Zone in Millstone this weekend (great new sports place with turf fields for baseball, soccer, and football--go to: http://www.sportszonenj.com/), and I was in awe of how grown up all the fifth grade boys looked. When did these little boys get so big? Today, Josh said to me in the car, "As the days go by, I am getting more mature, and I like it. I hear that the kids get really serious about dating next year in middle school." And this morning, 9-year-old Arielle came downstairs dressed for school wearing grey EYESHADOW! OMG, I am SO not ready for this!
On the other extreme, there is my little Jakey, who is glued to my hip. I can't even go upstairs without him following me, and he somehow manages to find me even in the bathroom! When I tell him he needs to sleep in his own bed because he's a big boy now, he shouts back, "I'm not a big boy, I'm a baby brother!" So, I guess I have to enjoy my "baby boy" now, because before I know it, he will be going into middle school too!
Peace, love, and macaroni,
Merri

Sleep Doctors Offer Advice on How to Spring Forward to Daylight Saving Time
By Miranda Hitti (From WebMD.com)Daylight saving time will push your clock ahead from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. on March 14, 2010. And you won't "fall back" until Nov. 7.
Dread the thought of getting even less sleep than you do now? Don't burrow under the covers. A little prep work in the days leading up to daylight saving time might make the transition easier.
Here are eight tips from sleep medicine doctors on getting ready for daylight saving time:
- Give yourself (and your kids) a jump start. Move up your bedtime and wake time, little by little, in the days leading up to daylight saving time, so you're already adjusted when the time changes. For instance, shave 10 minutes off in the six nights before the time change, or 15 minutes per night in the four nights before daylight saving time starts. "Go to bed earlier and get up earlier ... to train your nervous system," says Nicholas Rummo, MD, director of the Center for Sleep at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. Rummo recommends the same strategy for children. "Get them to bed a little earlier the week before" daylight saving time, Rummo says.
- See the light -- early. Expose yourself to light -- ideally, sunlight -- as early as you can. That can help reset your body's internal clock. Have breakfast in front of a window, Rummo suggests. Get out in the sunlight and walk outdoors, adds Charles Pollak, MD, director of sleep medicine at the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
- Avoid evening light. Daylight saving time will shift your bedtime an hour earlier than you're used to, so keep your evenings dark.
- Watch your exercise time. Get your daily physical activity before 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., because exercise late in the day "will tend to delay sleep time," Rummo says.
- If you take melatonin, do so early. Melatonin is a hormone made by the body to help regulate the body's internal clock; it's also sold as supplements. Pollak tells WebMD that melatonin is "tricky to use" and should be taken four to five hours before bedtime in an appropriate dose to be effective.
- Don't nap. Napping might undercut your efforts to get to sleep on time, Rummo notes.
- Give it time. Adjusting to daylight saving time generally takes "only a day or two," Pollak says. "It's just one hour, after all." Pollak says "owls" who stay up late may have more trouble with the time shift because the time change is "opposite to their tendency." His advice to those people is the same as for everyone else -- expose yourself to bright light in the morning, even if it goes against the grain.
- If all else fails ... "Caffeine, in moderation, has its place," Rummo says.
Motherhood Movie Review
I was asked to review an advanced copy of the movie Motherhood and I figured sure, why not, a movie with Uma Thurman, Anthony Edwards (my long lost Dr. Green from ER!), and the funny Minnie Driver, what could be bad about that? Plus, it takes place in Manhattan and is about a Mommy Blogger like me!
Here's the synopsis of the movie:
The story takes place in one chaotic day, in New York City. Eliza Welch (Uma Thurman) is a former fiction writer-turned-mom-blogger with her own site, "The Bjorn Identity." Putting her deeper creative ambitions on hold to raise her two children, Eliza lives and works in two rent-stabilized apartments in a walk-up tenement building smack in the middle of an otherwise upscale Greenwich Village. Eliza's good-natured, but absent-minded husband (Anthony Edwards) seems tuned out to his wife's conflicts, not to mention basic domestic reality, while her best friend Sheila (Minnie Driver) understands this - and Eliza - all too well. Starting at dawn, her to-do list is daunting: prepare for and throw her daughter's 6th birthday party, mind her toddler son, battle for a parking space, navigate playground politics and mend a rift after posting her best friend's confession on her blog. Does she survive?
My take on the movie:
Well, yes, Eliza survives, but barely. And boy, did she make being a mom in NYC look awful (ie, unless you have lots of money and a chauffeur!). Crazy neighbors, alternate side of the street parking fights, goofy kids' names, snobby moms, and the impossible nature of getting errands done while riding a bike in the rain! Even though I love NYC and lived there for over 10 years, this movie made me super happy to be raising my kids in the suburbs!
However, what I did like about the movie was its brutal honesty about motherhood. It covered so many honest, heartfelt moments about being a mom like:
- The beauty and serenity of watching your child peacefully sleep
- The curiosity of watching your kid interact with other kids at school
- The mixed feelings you have as your child becomes older and need you less
- The happiness of watching your child blow out the candles on his/her birthday cake
To date, I have never seen a movie that so truthfully shows all of the difficult questions mothers ask themselves almost every day:
- What happened to my mind after I became a mom?
- How could a once successful career woman like me turn into this?
- Will I ever have the same relationship with my husband that I did before kids?
- Does anyone find me attractive any more?
- Can I run away from it all?
- What would I do without my girlfriends?
"Motherhood" was released on February 23, 2010 on DVD and Blu Ray, and it features interviews with all of the stars and the director. Plus, as a special value-added incentive, "Motherhood" comes with $450 of coupons and money-saving offers for "essentials" that every mom needs. Marlboro’s Integrated Pre-School Program...
Register NOW!

PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF THREE- AND FOUR-YEAR-OLDS:
The Marlboro Township School District offers a half-day integrated pre-school program for three- and four-year-olds who are residents of Marlboro. The program is designed to bring special needs and regular pre-schoolers together in an integrated environment. Research has shown that all students benefit from this type of program.
Morning and afternoon sessions will be held five days per week at the Marlboro Early Learning Center. Parents are responsible for transportation of the regular pre-school students.
Enrollment is open to a limited number of regular pre-school students, who will be selected via a lottery process. Initially, 25 three-year-olds and 25 four-year-olds will be selected. These children will be administered a pre-school readiness screen in the order of the lottery selection.
The first 16 children in each age group who qualify will be offered enrollment in the program. The remaining children will be placed on a waiting list. Not all children administered the pre-school screen will qualify for the program or for the waiting list.
The lottery drawing for the 2010-11 school year will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, at the Marlboro Early Learning Center. To qualify, for the three-year-old program, a child must have
been born in 2007. To qualify for the four-year-old program, a child must have been born in 2006.
The pre-school readiness screen will be administered to those selected starting the week of May 24. Parents will be required to bring their child to the Marlboro Early Learning Center for the half-hour assessment during a designated time. A birth certificate and proof of residency must be presented at that screening. Parents will be notified in writing of the results and their child’s status by June 7.
Children who are selected for the three-year-old program this year will be given priority to enroll in next year’s four-year-old program. If placement is offered and accepted, parents/guardians are responsible for a minimum tuition payment of $2,000 (50% payable by August 13, 2010 and 50% payable by January 14, 2011). Fee is subject to change after April 13, 2010 but before June 18, 2010. Notification will be made to all parties involved if such a change occurs.
Applications are available online at :
www.marlboro.k12.nj.us or at the Board of Education building, 1980 Township Drive. Completed applications will be accepted by mail only and must be postmarked no later than Thursday, May 13, 2010. Contact Director of Special Services Robert Klein at (732) 972-2000, ext. 2036 for more information.
Make Food Fun for Picky Eaters

Picky eating is temporary and there are many things you can do to deal with picky eating in a positive way. One way is to make food fun! (From http://www.mypyramid.gov)
Get creative in the kitchen:
•Name a food your child helps create. Make a big deal of serving “Dawn’s Salad” or “Peter’s Sweet Potatoes” for dinner.
•Cut a food into fun and easy shapes with cookie cutters.
•Encourage your child to invent and help prepare new snacks or sandwiches. For example, make your own trail mixes from dry cereal and dried fruit.
•Have your child make towers out of whole-grain crackers, spell words with pretzel sticks, or make funny faces on a plate using different types of fruit.
•Jazz up the taste of vegetables with low-fat dressings or dips. Try hummus or bean spread as a dip for veggies.
Choose smart, fun snacks and meals:
•Bagel snake ― Split mini bagels in half. Cut each half into half circles. Spread the halves with toppings like tuna salad, egg salad, or peanut butter. Decorate with sliced cherry tomatoes, or banana slices. Arrange the half circles to form the body of a snake. Use olives or raisins for the eyes.
•English muffin pizza ― Top half an English muffin with tomato sauce, chopped veggies and low-fat mozzarella cheese. Heat until the cheese is melted.
•Smiley sandwiches ― Top a slice of bread with peanut butter and use an apple slice for a smile and raisins for eyes.
•Frozen bananas ― Put a wooden stick into a peeled banana. Cut large bananas in half first. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze. Once frozen, peel off the plastic and enjoy.
•Potato pal ― Top half a small baked potato with eyes, ears, and a smile. Try peas for eyes, a halved cherry tomato for a nose, and a low-fat cheese wedge as a smile. Be creative, you’ll be surprised at how many foods can turn into eyes, noses, and smiles!
•Frozen graham cracker sandwiches ― Mix mashed bananas and peanut butter, spread between graham crackers and freeze.
•Fruit smoothies ― Blend fresh or frozen fruit with yogurt and milk or juice. Try 100% orange juice, low-fat yogurt, and frozen strawberries.
•Frozen juice cups ― Pour 100% fruit juice into small paper cups. Freeze. To serve, peel off the paper and eat.
•Ants on a log ― Thinly spread peanut butter on narrow celery sticks. Top with a row of raisins or other diced dried fruit.
10 Weight Loss Tips That Work in 1 Minute or Less

By
There's nothing like a weight loss strategy that takes almost no time or effort--but still works like a charm! Here are 10 successful strategies to cut calories and burn fat that literally take 60 seconds or less.
1. Mix a juice spritzer
Combine your favorite juice (half of your usual amount) with plain or sparkling water. You can cut up to 85 calories per glass--and lose 5 pounds or more a year.
2. Walk while you talk
Burn calories while you talk on the phone: Do the laundry (68 calories), set the table (85), or water plants (102).
3. Study the wrapper
At a quick glance, that candy bar appears to contain 220 calories. But a closer look may reveal that it (or a bottle of juice, bag of crackers, or bag of nuts) provides two or more servings--which more than doubles those calories.
4. Sip green tea before a walk
The caffeine frees fatty acids so that you burn fat more easily. And the polyphenols (antioxidant compounds) in green tea appear to work with caffeine to increase calorie burn. (If you have high blood pressure, skip this tip.)
5. Pack a lunch
Dining out more than 5 times a week may make you eat more--nearly 300 calories a day--than if you dine out less frequently.
6. Dip your bread
Use olive oil in place of butter. It's healthier and may also help you eat less. In a recent study, dippers ate a total of 52 fewer calories, on average, than those who used butter.
7. Sprinkle flax on cereal
High-fiber ground flaxseed can help curb your appetite and eliminate calories. Add it to yogurt or muffin and bread mixes--it's available in health food stores.
8. Schedule a blood test
About 1 in every 12 women (most of whom don't know it) has an underactive thyroid, which can slow down her metabolism.
9. Supersize your H2O
Buy the big bottle when it comes to good-for-you stuff such as water: You'll drink more.
10. Eat a chunky salad
Chop carrots, celery, sweet potatoes, zucchini, or other veggies instead of shredding or slicing. It takes more effort to munch bigger pieces; you'll do more chewing and eat less during the main course.
Meet 2010's American Girl...
Lanie Holland
DON' MISS THIS FUN EVENT AT FREEHOLD BARNES & NOBLE: Monday, March 15 - A Special American Girl Afternoon (4:30 PM for Girls 7 and over!)
Every January, American Girl introduces a new Girl of the Year®, a character whose interests and concerns reflect those of girls today. The 2010 Girl of the Year is Lanie Holland, a ten-year-old who loves wildlife and the outdoors. She also loves science, and dreams of working with endangered species when she grows up. There’s just one problem: Lanie is an “outside” girl trapped in an “inside” family.
Lanie Holland discovers the world in her own backyard. Lanie™ longs to go camping and have other outdoor adventures, but the rest of her family just wants to stay home—and indoors. They care about the earth and sustainable, eco-conscious living, but they prefer to view nature through the windows of their Boston-area home. Even Lanie’s little sister prefers to stay inside, far away from crawly bugs—although she is intrigued by the monarch caterpillars in her classroom.
With the arrival of adventurous and outdoorsy Aunt Hannah, Lanie finds a kindred spirit. Aunt Hannah and Lanie turn the Hollands’ backyard into a garden, and while working there, Lanie discovers to her surprise that outdoor adventures can happen anywhere, even in the middle of the city. As Lanie begins to explore the natural world around her, she finds fascinating plants and animals right in her own neighborhood. Soon her little sister, and finally her whole family, comes around and begins to share her interest in the outdoors.
Aunt Hannah shows Lanie that nature is always nearby.
One of the reasons we chose to focus Lanie's story on nature and the outdoors is to remind girls and their parents how important—and fun!—it is for kids to spend time outdoors. Did you know that the average 7-year-old can recognize up to 200 corporate logos but cannot identify the types of trees in her own yard?
To reverse this trend, give the girl in your life a daily dose of the outdoors—it will help improve her physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation, yet research shows that outdoor play in natural settings stimulates cooperation, creativity, and problem-solving. Interaction with the natural world can also reduce the symptoms of attention-deficit disorder and lower stress. And outdoor play is a natural way to exercise, which reduces both obesity and diabetes—two diseases on the increase in our children today.
To highlight the importance of spending time outdoors like Lanie, American Girl has partnered with National Wildlife Federation (NWF), a nonprofit conservation organization. We are proud and excited to work with this important group, whose mission is “to inspire Americans to protect wildlife for our children’s future.”
NWF's “Be Out There” movement inspires families to open the door and get outside. American Girl is offering matching tees for girls and dolls to help promote the effort. In addition, NWF has joined us in creating downloadable curriculum materials that teachers and parents are free to use.

Fun Facts about the Harlem Globetrotters

I grew up in a basketball crazy house, with my dad, brother, and Pop-Pop yelling at the Philly 76ers on TV. As a kid, my brother and I also LOVED the Harlem Globetrotters. I fondly remember going to see them play as a kid, and my brother just wanted to meet Curly and get his autograph. I also remember watching their Saturday morning cartoon, and then going out and trying to do tricks just like them. The Harlem Globetrotters are in Trenton on March 13 and at Brookdale on March 16 and 17 (see event listings above). Don't miss them! Here are some fun facts:
- Created by Abe Saperstein in 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, the team adopted the name Harlem because of its connotations as a major African-American community. Over the years they have played more than 20,000 exhibition games in 118 countries.
- Brother Bones's whistled version of "Sweet Georgia Brown" is the team's signature song.
- The Globetrotters were initially a serious competitive team, and despite a flair for entertainment, they would only clown for the audience after establishing a safe lead in the game.
-
The Globetrotters gradually worked comic routines into their act until they became known more for entertainment than sports. The Globetrotters' acts often feature incredible coordination and skillful handling of one or more basketballs, such as passing or juggling balls between players, balancing or spinning balls on their fingertips, and making unusual, difficult shots.
-
Among the players who have been Globetrotters are NBA greats Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain, Connie "The Hawk" Hawkins, Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, as well as Marques Haynes, George "Meadowlark" Lemon, Jerome James, former Temple coach John Chaney, Reece "Goose" Tatum and Hubert "Geese" Ausbie. Another popular team member in the 1970s and 1980s was Fred "Curly" Neal who was the best dribbler of that era of the team's history and was immediately recognizable due to his shaven head.
- In addition to their hundreds of exhibition games, the Globetrotters have faced some competitive action since the mid-1990s. On September 12, 1995, they lost 91–85 to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's All Star Team in Vienna, Austria ending an alleged run of 8,829 straight victories in going back to 1971. The 48-year-old Abdul-Jabbar scored 34 points.
- Harlem Globetrotters, a Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoon, broadcast from September 12, 1970 to May 1973. Originally broadcast on CBS, and later re-run on NBC as The Go-Go Globetrotters. The cartoon Globetrotters also guest-starred three times on the The New Scooby Doo Movies.
- The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island, a 1981 made-for-TV film featured the Globetrotters alongside Bob Denver and the rest of the cast of Gilligan's Island. The film's plot follows the first animated series' formula to a degree with a conflict that ends with an unusual basketball game against an opposing team made up of robots.
- These eight people have been officially named as honorary members by the team: Henry Kissinger, Bob Hope, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Whoopi Goldberg, Nelson Mandela, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Pope John Paul II (In 2000, Press agent Lee Solters arranged a ceremony orchestrated in front of a crowd of 50,000 in Saint Peter's Square in which the Pope was recognized as an honorary Globetrotter), Jesse Jackson
-
In addition, Bill Cosby (in 1972) and Magic Johnson (in 2003) have been signed to $1 a year lifetime contracts with the Globetrotters. Cosby's was increased to $1.05 in 1986.

Taste a Rainbow Muffins

Here's what little leprechauns look forward to on St. Patrick's Day: a magical snack that can add color to the grayest March afternoon. Pot of gold not included.
- Ingredients
- White cake mix (we used an 18-1/4-ounce box)
- Food coloring (red, blue, green, and yellow)
- Baking cups
- Whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
-
Prepare your favorite white cake mix, then divide the batter evenly among six small bowls. Following the chart below, dye each bowl of batter a rainbow color.
RAINBOW COLOR & DROPS OF FOOD COLORING: Purple: 9 red and 6 blue drops; Blue: 12 drops; Green: 12 drops; Yellow: 12 drops; Orange: 12 yellow and 4 red drops; Red: 18 drops -
Line 16 muffin pan wells with baking cups. Evenly distribute the purple batter among the cups, then the blue, and so on, following the order shown. As you go, gently spread each layer of batter with the back of a spoon to cover the color underneath.
-
Bake the cupcakes according to your recipe directions. Before serving, remove the paper wrapping, and if you like, top each cupcake with a whipped-cream cloud.

St. Patrick's Pot of Gold

Surprise your favorite little people on March 17th with these wee emerald pots filled with sweet, edible gold.
- Ingredients
-
- 3-ounce box of lemon-flavor gelatin
- 6 limes
- Sugar
- 1 teaspoon of whipped cream
Instructions
-
Line an 8-inch square baking dish with plastic wrap, leaving several inches of overhang on each side (this will make removing the gelatin easier). Combine a 3-ounce box of lemon-flavor gelatin and 1 cup of boiling water in a medium bowl, stirring until the gelatin is dissolved. Stir in 1 cup of cold water, then pour the mixture into the baking dish. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and chill the gelatin for 4 hours or until firm, then slice the gelatin into 1/2-inch cubes.
-
Cut off the top quarter of each of 6 limes, then, without cutting into the fruit, slice a thin layer of peel from the bottom of each one to help them stand upright. With a small knife, cut around the inside of each lime's rind to loosen the pulp, then spoon it out to make a shell.
-
Place a pinch of sugar and 1 teaspoon of whipped cream in the bottom of each shell, then fill each lime pot with gelatin gold. Makes 6

Rainbow Cupcakes

It's not far to the gold at the end of this rainbow-topped Emerald Isle cupcake, just the thing for your lads and lasses on St. Patrick's Day.
- Ingredients
-
- A cooled cupcake
- Grass-green frosting
- Several flavors of Airheads candies
- A pot's worth of gold coins
Instructions
-
To make one, first top a cooled cupcake (baked from your favorite recipe) with grass-green frosting.
-
For the rainbow, use a large, heavy knife (parents only) to cut a long, narrow strip from each of several flavors of Airheads candies (this is sticky stuff, so work on waxed paper). Lay the strips side by side, press them together, then cut the ribbon of strips in half to make two rainbows.
-
Curve each one into an arch and trim the ends as shown. Set one rainbow upright on the cupcake (save the other for another cupcake) and deposit a pot's worth of gold coins at one end. If necessary, place a gold coin behind the rainbow for support.
