So, how did it actually become Memorial Day Weekend already? Fastest school year ever! Well, summertime is almost here, and the living is easy (well, easier). But first, we have to get through all the graduations, concerts, and end-of-the-year celebrations that keep us so busy this time of the year.
I love, love, love summertime. And I especially love Memorial Day Weekend, which is the unofficial start of summer. Even though it is usually 50 degrees and raining. But so what, the pools are now open and we can officially go swimming. Why is it that kids can swim when the air temperature is 50 degrees and the water temperature only 40 degrees. Kind of crazy, huh? I have awesome Memorial Day memories of freezing my tush off on the Fire Island Ferry and then being stuck in my Fire Island Share House wearing double layers of sweat clothes and playing drinking games. Those were the days...
And guess what, Mom, I can officially wear my white pants and white shoes without being hunted down by the fashion police. Now, my daughter Arielle will want to wear a tank top to school every day (even when it is 50 degrees and raining!). And yes, it's flip-flop time--time to get my bright red pedicure!
So, why do I love summer so much? That's easy...no school, no books, no tests, no letters to the teacher, no Hebrew school, no sporting events, no recitals, no student-teacher conferences, no board meetings. Just LAZY, HAZY DAYS of summer ahead. And, plenty of barbecues, watermelon (Jakey's favorite), outdoor concerts, trips to the beach, sandy shoes, wet towels, amusement parks, county fairs, water ice (that's what we called Italian Ice back in Philly!), frozen drinks, picnics, camp, color war, theatre in the park, ice cream with jimmies (that's what we called sprinkles in Philly, yes, another language!), and the smell of sunscreen, coconut, bug spray, and chlorine.
We have a jam-packed Memorial Day edition for you, complete with some of my favorite local summertime things to do, fun summer crafts like homemade sidewalk chalk, and great cookout recipes and patriotic desserts like a red, white, and blue muffins. There's even a BBQ recipe for pineapple boatsfrom my grill master husband Russell.Peace, love, and macaroni,
