It's Time for Purim and HAMENTASHEN!

February 28, 2015

Purim is the most fun-filled holiday in Judaism - the costumes, the carnival, the games, the masks, the gift baskets from friends, and the HAMENTASHEN! Here's a recipe for this favorite Jewish treat!

Basic Hamentashen Recipe

  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • Preserves, prunes, chocolate chips, or Nutella

Preheat oven to 400℉. Sift together dry ingredients. Work in butter to dry ingredients. Add the eggs and orange juice. Mix all. The mixture should be hard to mix. When you knead it together with your hands, it should not be sticking to them. If it does stick to your hands or looks wet, then add a little more flour. Refrigerate at least two hours, or overnight.

On floured cookie board, flatten dough with a rolling pin. Next, use a cup or glass to make  circles (it should have around a 6-inch circumference). Put filling (apricot, cherry or raspberry preserves; lekvar prunes, chocolate chips, or nutella) in center. Fold three sides up to make it look like a triangle. Make sure most of the filling is in the dough. Place on greased cookie sheet and bake for about 15 minutes or till lightly browned.
