Hello MacMammas and Pappas:
Happy Fall--my favorite time of the year! Fall foliage, mums, scarecrows, hoodies, sweaters, leather jackets, scarves, boots, apple and pumpkin picking, apple cider, hayrides, and cider donuts! Check out our great article--19 Boredom Busters for Fall--to keep you busy this season!
I have managed to survive 2 Back-to-School nights last week (including trying to juggle the schedule of 2 high school students at the same time), and I am always amazed how much younger the teachers look each year! My 15-year-old son actually looks older than his chemistry teacher. His teacher knew that he looks very young--in his intro, he said, "Let me tell me about myself...I graduated college."
So far, we have had a drama-free Back to School, and my kids are loving high school. I signed up for a Grade Alert on his parent portal, and now I get an email about every 5 minutes letting me know a new grade has been entered. It's a little annoying, but at least I will not be surprised come report card time.
My daughter is very spirited and is loving the Colts Neck High School football games--last week, her and her friends came to my house to dress all in green with funky hair dos, green and gold glitter cougar paw makeup on their faces, and high knee socks. This is a kid who finds any excuse to dress up in a costume. She used to dress up in funky socks and soccer ball hairbands just to play recreation soccer. When she spent the whole game picking flowers on the sideline and babysitting the coaches' youngest daughter, it was clear that sports were just not her thing. She is already planning her group Halloween costume with her friends.
She tried to dress up my oldest son for the game--but somehow the green face paint looked like gangrene and the high knee socks on his long legs made him look ridiculous. My house is filled to the brim every weekend with teenagers and it kind of feels like a dormitory, but I love that they have such nice friends and feel comfortable hanging out at our house.
On a final note, the Jewish holidays are on time this year (not early like last year or late like the year before). After all this crazy back-to-school stuff, I am actually looking forward to having the kids home from school for 2 days...even if I have to cook and sit in synagogue all day. One of my new favorite traditions is baking round challah for the new year. I spent Sunday morning with friends making challah and brought 10 unbaked challahs home with me. While I put most of them in the freezer, I accidentally left a few out on the table. Well, I went to Marlboro Day and came back to some monster yeast challahs about a foot high. Be sure to check out my recipe for challah, as well as my favorite recipes for apple kugel and cake.
Happy soon-to-be Fall and a happy and sweet new year to all who celebrate!
Peace, love, and macaroni
