My daughters had the pleasure of taking private beginner lessons this week at School of Rock in Marlboro.

My younger daughter Rachel, 7, started piano lessons with the music director/music instrument instructor Andy Letke.  Since Andy was a man with a long braided beard, and she's a little shy I wasn't sure how this was going to go.  Let's just say, don't judge a book by its cover.  I sat in on their lesson.  He taught her the notes on the piano in a very calm, sweet manner.  Also, he praised her for her ability to get it right and even had her play a short song to the Beatles tune "Flying."  I told him I felt like he should be on Sesame Street for how soft-spoken and complimentary he was.  I could not believe how much he covered in just thirty minutes.  She had the biggest smile on her face when she was finished.

My daughter Alison, 9, took vocal lessons with Deseree Spinks, the head of vocals at SOR. Alison will alternate learning piano every other week--this kid was belting it out (I could hear this through the door), feeling comfortable and loving her instructor.  She came out feeling so proud of herself.  She's still running around the house singing.  So I know it was a huge success.  She's practicing all that she learned in just the one lesson.

The point is, for a parent, our job is to give our children a platform to make them shine.  Some after-school activities just aren't right for some kids.  But, when you find the one that brings out your child's inner confidence, you know you've struck gold. I was so thrilled my girls left on a high and their self-confidence was lifted-- especially since Alison was hesitant about going.

Rookies Class -- Wednesday 4:30 - 5:30 pm, kids ages 4-6
This is a weekly hour-long class, which creates a positive and fun environment for budding new musicians.  It's a creative opportunity for kids to get their hands on instruments and actually jam together at an early age.

At the foundation of this course is rhythm. A pair of drumsticks will be standard issue for each new student making sure that these youngsters understand how to jam together with structure. We will work toward the goal of playing along with songs, though we will be spending a good amount of time on fun group rhythm games. At first, the drum kit will be utilized as independent pieces – will refer to this as "musical pizza." The different drums will be assigned individually similar to an orchestral approach.

This is going to be a fun class disciplining the kids to work well in a band environment and encourage them to get a hands-on appreciation of music.
