Hot Mess: How to Stop Summer Hair Damage

Sun! Surf! Sand! Split ends! Summer can be hard on your hair. Beauty expert Susie Galvez, author of You Are So Going to Thank Me for This…, reveals how to solve some common problems.

SUN DAMAGE
The sun can fade color and turn highlights brassy. Protect your hair with a hat or scarf when you go outside. If you dye or highlight your hair, Dove® Color Care Leave On Conditioner, with UV Complex, helps keep your color vibrant.

WATER DAMAGE
Frolicking in the ocean is fun, but salt water can dry your hair. And pool water can turn blond hair green. Before you jump into either, Galvez says, rinse your head in clear water. Hair absorbs liquid like a sponge, so when it’s already saturated, it won’t soak up as much seawater or pool water. Immediately after swimming, rinse again. Then, at home, restore shine to your hair with Suave Professionals® Moroccan Infusion Shine Shampoo and Conditioner.

HEAT DAMAGE
Extreme temperatures (especially dry heat) can harm your hair. Add daily blow-drying, flat ironing or hot curling, and your hair can look fried by summer’s end. Galvez suggests air-drying your hair as often as possible. If you must use hot styling tools, prep with TRESemmé® Platinum Strength Heat Spray. It helps protect against heat-styling damage and leaves hair shiny and moisturized.

ACCESSORY DAMAGE
The ponytail holder or elastic headband you use to keep your hair off your face can cause breakage at the spot where it touches your hair. Prevent damage by switching to a soft fabric tie or head wrap, and vary its position so you’re not stressing your strands in the same place every day.

HUMIDITY FRIZZ
OK, humidity won’t damage your hair, but it can make your style go haywire. Anti-frizz products coat the hair shaft, sealing out the moisture that’s in the air, Galvez says.
