Merri Takes It to the Max!

Week 5--Halfway Done!

July 12, 2012

This above quote totally summarizes what is so great about Max Fitness--you first need the motivation to transform your life, to exercise, and to eat well every day. Max Fitness is motivation in full gear--from the notes from the trainers and coaches to the everyday high fives, fist bumps, and "Good jobs" you hear each day in class. By providing classes 5 days a week, Max Fitness makes it easy for exercise and eating well to become a habit. After 5 weeks in, feeling good and working out has become a habit for me. It's nice to see all the friendly faces in class every day, to finish up a class and know that you made it through, to hold a plank 10 seconds longer each day, to eat better and feel less full and bloated, to have more energy than ever before. You feel empowered, strong, and in control of your life.

There is something about the group dynamics of Max Fitness that makes you want to work out harder, do more sit-ups, plank a few seconds longer, stay on the Max-compliant diet, share recipes and tips for what gets you through the day. I also love the "Members Only" Facebook page, where I can go on and ask questions, pick up recipes, and get inspired by other members. One member just went on and asked "What do you eat to fulfill your sweet tooth" and within 5 minutes, there were 5 different suggestions. Another member was having a hard week and posted about it, and by the end of the day, there were almost  25 different cheer-up, inspiring messages for her. A few people even offered to take her out for coffee, lunch, or to exercise right next to her.

And once you start exercising 5 days a week, it becomes addictive. Max Fitness members who never were athletic are entering 5Ks, jogging/walking around the parking lot before class, even doing squats and planks on the beach. They even created a new word "wogging"--a cross between walking and jogging. That would be me--mostly walking, with a little jogging in between. One day, I hope to be jogging more, and walking in between. As I mentioned last week, I have been doing fitness videos from the Free OnDemand on Cablevision. I spent a couple days in Ocean City, NJ, and I was doing squats, pushups, leg lifts, lunges, and planks in my brother's shore house. What has gotten into me? Umm, Max Fitness, I would say!

Last week, I posted about the delicious smoothies that help me with my sweet tooth. A few people asked for recipes. I don't really have any official recipes, but here's a few suggestions.

Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie
1/2 cup of unsweetend vanilla almond milk, 1/4 frozen banana, 1 tablespoon peanut butter--Blend. You can add ice to make it more slushy. Or you can replace peanut butter with almond or cashew butter.

Fruit Smoothie
Any frozen fruit, 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I like the mango, pineapple, strawberry banana mix that Dole makes. You can add a little coconut extract to make it taste tropical. I also like to add frozen cherries and bananas. Or Wegman's has a frozen mixed berries bag.

Coffee Frappucino
1/2 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, iced coffee, ice cubes

If you want to make any of these into a protein shake, replace the almond milk with water and add vanilla protein powder.
