Summer Organization

By Stephanie Clunn, Publisher of North Lake Macaroni Kid June 26, 2015

Did you have grandiose plans of organizing your summer stock of supplies and goodies...last month? Did visions of sunscreens and beach towels, sand toys and water bottles all neatly packed Martha Stewart-style into cute little baskets dance in your head, but never make it to your own reality show of life?

Well, summer is here and if you're anything like me, you probably haven't organized your summer stuff yet. So let’s get to it!

You know what needs doing!

Bathing suits are still missing or too small. We’re grabbing for this and that and struggling for a peaceful, organized trip to the beach. The shovels and pails are somewhere, but where? The sunscreen that you KNOW you’ll need spur of the moment is nowhere to be found as well! The hats for the baby, beach towels, water shoes and big carrying bags for the beach. You know… EVERYTHING. Let’s get it all in one place!

Take one afternoon and make a list of all-things-summer that you will need and then spend some time collecting it all! Make an outing bag where you keep sunscreen, bottled water, towels, extra sunglasses, hats, hand sanitizer and a first aid kit. Stick it in the closet, or better yet, the back of the vehicle, for that unexpected outing (keep water bottles in the house if you opt to stash your bag in the car).

Get all of the fun, must-have beach, lake or pool items together. Tubes, floaties, life-jackets, noodles and rafts get put in the most amazing places during off season, don't they? Think about swim lessons if you don’t have accomplished swimmers yet. Get your summer gear together now and you won’t have to think about it again until it's time to tuck it away! When you get home, refresh the bag by rinsing off sand toys, replenishing with clean towels, refilling anything that got emptied, tossing trash that accumulated, and wiping down sunscreen bottles.

Summer may be a time of rest for the kids, but it often ends up being a lot more work for moms. Make it a little easier on yourself by staying organized. A little time organizing and putting similar things together can save you a headache (and maybe even a sunburn!) in the long run.
